Foreword:
All praise is for Almighty ALLAH Alone and it is enough (Alhamdulillahi wa kafaa).
And indeed the best speech is the speech of ALLAH(the book of allah Quran) and the best guidance is the guidance of Muhammad(sallallahu alaihi wa sallam).

You we worship, and You we ask for help   [Surah Faatiha, Aayat 5]

                1)   TAUHEED AND SHIRK

Shirk has been defined by scholars in the light of Qur'an and Sunnah as "To associate anything* in the worship of Allah or to ascribe a partner in anything which is solely for ALLAH". Shirk can be summarized as "To associate anything with ALLAH (associating while believing these in ALLAH) or without ALLAH (associating while not believing these in Allah) in the following four things:

a) ALLAH's Self                                         (ALLAH KI ZAAT)
b) ALLAH's Attributes                               (ALLAH KAY SIFAAT)
c) ALLAH's Authorities                             (ALLAH KAY EKHTIYAARAAT)
d) ALLAH's Worship                                 (ALLAH KAY EBADAAT)

* (a tree, an idol, a mountain, a river, sun, moon, cow, fire, water or a person(whether living or dead whther ordinary or high status etc.)

Modern scholars for ease of understanding explained Shirk as to associate anyone in the 3 categories of Tauheed, in the light of Quran and Sunnah

a) Belief of Unity in ALLAH's LORDSHIP                            (TAUHEED RUBOOBIYA)
b) Belief of Unity in ALLAH's Divinity or Worship             (TAUHEED ULOOHIYA   i.e., BANDAGI )
c) Belief of Unity in ALLAH's NAMES and Attributes        (TAUHEED ASMAA WA SIFAAT)

Scholars defined going against the teachings of Prophet (Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) or not obeying him as shirk in Allah's worship.

It should be noted that the ancient tribes from the ancient period acknowledged Allah's Lordship. The issue is that others are also attributed partnership which nullified their Tauheed ar-Ruboobiya

Allah sent the Prophets(Alayhum Salaam) and then He sent Messengers (Alayhum Salaam) from Nooh Alayhis Salaam to Muhammad (Sallallahu Alayhi wa sallam) only to invite people towards the 2nd Point i.e., TAUHEED AL-ULOOHIYYA.

To invite people towards Allah's worship and to warn them against attributing partners in Allah's divinity and Worship.

And We have indeed sent a Messenger to every Ummah (community, nation) (saying): "Worship Allah (Alone), and shun the Taghut (all false deities)…..
                                    [Quran, Surah An-Nahl, Aayat 36]

2) ALLAH WILL NOT FORGIVE SHIRK UNLESS REPENTED

Verily ALLAH forgives not setting up partners in worship with HIM but He forgives whom He pleases sins other than that and whoever sets up partners in worship with ALLAH has indeed strayed far away.[Surah Nisa 4, Ayat 116]
3) ALL DEEDS(BIG OR SMALL) WILL NULLIFY BECAUSE OF SHIRK

Shirk has been classed into Greater Shirk and Lesser Shirk.
It should be noted that only greater shirk nullifies the Deeds and is a nullifier of Islam.

1) In Surah Zumar Chapter 39, verse 65, ALLAH says if Prophet(sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) commits shirk even his deeds will go in vain. Prophets are sent to advise and warn people against shirk prophets can never do shirk.

2) In Surah An'aam after mentioning many of the prophets and acknowledging that all of them were Saaliheen(pious people) ALLAH mentions that even if they commit shirk all their deeds will go in vain

q
 4)   SOME EXAMPLES (INCLUDING BOTH GREATER AND LESSER SHIRK AND THOSE THINGS WHICH HARM ONE'S TAWHEED):

  • Accusing a follower of Quran and Sunnah and a true believer as a Mushrik or Kaafir. In fact no one should accuse any common Muslim as a Mushrik unless his Kufr is blatant like if anyone is a Qaadiyani etc., The correct way is that the actions should be criticized as so-and-so action is Shirk

  • Associating a wife or a son or a husband or a brother or a father to Allah Sub'hanahu wa Ta'ala (because the brother of a human is a human, similarly wife, son, sister, father). Allah is far above than having sons and uncles or aunties

  • Believing that ALLAH is everywhere physically (by His Zaat); In this case you will join everything (not a single thing) in the Zaat of Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala; Allah is with us by his knowledge and other attributes but ALLAH is above His Arsh in a unique manner that suits His majesty as He declared in many Ayats of Quran and as unanimously agreed by the Sahaba and the Salaf Saliheen.

The Most Gracious Istawa(Rose Over) the Throne  [Surah Taa 'Ha, Ayat 5]

Imam Ibn Katheer(Rahimahullah) mentions in the commentary of this Aayat from Surah Taa'Ha

A discussion concerning this has already preceded in Surat Al-A'raf, so there is no need to repeat it here. The safest path to take in understanding this; is the way of the Salaf (predecessors). Their way was to accept that which has been reported concerning this from the Book and the Sunnah without describing it, reinterpreting it, resembling it to creation, rejecting it, or comparing it to attributes of the creatures

He (Rahimahullah) mentions a description of Istawa in Surah Aa'raaf, Ayat 54

As for Allah's statement, "And then He rose over (Istawa) the Throne" the people had several conflicting opinions over its meaning. However, we follow the way that our righteous predecessors took in this regard, such as Malik, Al-Awza`i, Ath-Thawri, Al-Layth bin Sa`d, Ash-Shafi`i, Ahmad, Ishaq bin Rahwayh and the rest of the scholars of Islam, in past and present times. Surely, we accept the apparent meaning of, Al-Istawa, without discussing its true essence, equating it (with the attributes of the creation), or altering or denying it (in any way or form). We also believe that the meaning that comes to those who equate Allah with the creation is to be rejected, for nothing is similar to Allah

Some friends wrongly misinterpret Allah's Throne(Arsh) as something Virtual non-existent  and describe Arsh as whatever they like. The below Ayat is their refutation.
And He it is Who has created the heavens and the earth in six Days and His Throne was over the water……    [Surah Hud, Aayat 7]
q

Many Saheeh Hadeeth also describe the same apparent meaning as is accepted by the
Salaf Saliheen(Righteous predecessors from the foremost generations of this Ummah).

Narrated Imran bin Hussayn(Radhi Allahu Anhu)
(When people asked about beginning of creation to Prophet(SAS))
He(the Prophet(Sallallahu Alayhi wa sallam) said, "First of all, there was nothing but Allah, and (then He created His Throne). His throne was over the water, and He wrote everything in the Book (in the Heaven) and created the Heavens and the Earth."
     [Saheeh Al-Bukhari, Volume 4, Book 54, Number 414]

Narrated Abu Huraira(Radhi Allahu Anhu):
Allah's Apostle(Sallallahu Alayhi wa sallam) said, "When Allah completed the creation, He wrote in His Book which is with Him on His Throne, "My Mercy overpowers My Anger."
                                                                 [Saheeh Al-Bukhari, Volume 4, Book 54, Number 416]
[Saheeh Muslim, Book 37, Number 6626]

  • Believing that Allah has appointed deputies from humans or some Majzoobs(mentally upset people) who assist in managing the worlds or balancing the earth etc. or someone in grave is handling any of these affairs

  • Attributing the cause of rain or any happenings to stars or the movement of planets/stars

  • Believing that some human knows the unknown everything past and present

  • Giving names like Ghouse-a-Aazam, Ghareeb Nawaaz, Banday Nawaaz, Ganj Baksh, Daata etc. to other than Allah

  • Believing that someone far away or someone in a grave or on a mountain or on a cloud or a cave will hear you when you call and will help you in your difficulty (i.e., seeking help, refuge from other than ALLAH) or in short keeping trust/hope in people other than ALLAH and turning to them seeking help

  • Seeking blessings from trees or walls or people by touching them or asking them for blessings, Keeping photos of any 'baba' or 'soofee ji', Keeping diagrams (NAKSHAY) and Numbered Tables etc., and or other such tables like "Louh e Qurani" etc., in houses, offices and other places like hotels, auto rickshaws, cars etc. with the belief of seeking blessing and thereby profit (and barakat)
Narrated Abu Waaqid al-Laythi(Radhi Allahu Anhu):
"When Allah's Messenger(Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) set for Hunayn(the battle of Hunayn), they passed by a tree called Dhatu Anwaat(lit. "that which has things hanging on it"). The idolators used to hang their weapons on its branches for good fortune. Some of the Sahaaba who were new in Islam asked the Prophet(Sallallahu Alayhi wa sallam) to designate a similar tree for them. The Prophet(Sallallahu Alayhi wa Sallam) replied "Subhaanallah"(Glorified is Allah). This is just like what people of Prophet Moses'(Alayhissalaam) said to him:
"By the one in whose hand is my soul! All of you will follow the path of those before you"
[Sunan At-Tirmidhi, Abwaab Al Fitan,2271; Musnad Ahmad, Musnad ul Ansaar;
Musannaf Ibn Abee Shaybah, Kitaab Al Fitan; Saheeh Ibn Hibban, Kitab At-Taareekh, 6702;]
[Graded Saheeh by Allaama Al-Albaani in Saheeh Sunan At-Tirmidhi]
Also see Mishkat Al Masabeeh, Vol. 3, 5408]

  • Doing deeds for show off or for getting appraisal from people or kings or to be heard by others and to seek worldly gains

  • Praying or seeking religious education or byhearting Quran solely for money or for the people

  • Performing sacrifices for other than ALLAH or associating others with the sacrifice in the name of ALLAH, or Tawaaf i.e.,taking circles to any thing other than the Kaabah

  • Wearing rings, bangles/bracelets, talismans, special stones, special clothes, special sandals with a view that they avoid misfortune or difficulties

  • Blindly following the scholars in Haraam and Halaal without proof from ALLAH and His Prophet's(salle allahu alaihi wa sallam) guidance

  • Believing that whatever someone (other than ALLAH) wills happens or believing that Allah will not will something not pleasing to someone

Ibn 'Abbas said, "A man said, to the Prophet(Sallallahu Alayhi wa sallam), "Whatever Allah wills and you will" He said, "You have put an equal with Allah. It is what Allah alone wills."
[Collected by Imam Bukhari, in Al-Adab ul Mufrad, Hadeeth 783]
Shaykh Fu'ad Abdul Baqi classed as Saheeh

  • Believing in the theory "Energy can Neither be created nor be destroyed"

  • Believing in soothsayers, astrologers or fortune tellers

Allah's Prophet (Sallallahu Alayhi wa sallam) is reported to say "Whoever went to a fortune teller and believed in what he said is free of what was revealed to Muhammad(sas)"
[Al-Hadeeth(Part of a Hadeeth) See Sunan Abu Dawud, Hadeeth 3904]
Shaykh Zubayr Alee Za'ee Classed as Hasan

  • Nazar i.e., offerings for other than ALLAH like offering sweets, dishes for the dead

  • Taking a vow or oath of other than ALLAH ( "ALLAH KE ILAWA KISI AUR KI QASAM KHAANA")

Sa'id ibn Ubaydah said: Ibn Umar(Radhi Allahu Anhu) heard a man swearing: No, I swear by the Ka'bah. Ibn Umar said to him: I heard Allah's Apostle (Sallallahu Alayhi wa sallam) say: He who swears by anyone but Allah has committed Shirk (is polytheist).
[Sunan Abu Dawud, Hadeeth 3251]
[Sunan at-Tirmizee, Hadeeth 1535]
Imam Tirmizee graded it Hasan and mentioned that some have reported
"He committed Shirk or Kufr"
Shaykh Ahmad Shakir and Shaykh Zubayr Za'ee graded it Saheeh.

  • Believing in omens in traveling or flight bookings or appointments

  • Taking names like Abdun Nabi(Slave of Nabi), Abdul Hussain, Abdul Kabah etc. is not permissible and believing in such names is shirk

5)   CLARIFICATIONS:
VIEW 1:
The Ahle Sunnah Wal Jama'at believe that it is permissible to call to the Awliyah Allah (radi Allahu anhum) for assistance or help as this is not associating partners with Allah Taala. We believe that Allah Taala has given the Awliya Allah special powers to assist the creation with His permission.

REALITY:
This is not the Aqeedah of Ahle Sunnah Wal Jama'at but the innovators among the Soofees. May ALLAH guide them. The Ahle Sunnah wal Jama'at means the Sahaaba, the Taba'een and the Imams like Imam Sa'eed bin Musayyib, Sha'abee, Malik, Abu Haneefa, Abdullah bin Mubarak, Shafa'ee, Ahmad, Tabari, Auzaai, Sufyan Thouree, Bukhari, Muslim, Tirmidzi, abu dawood and those predecessor from them(rahimahumullah) who followed the companions of the Prophet(sallalalhu alaihi wa sallam). These people i.e., companions and the taba'een(students of the companions) are referred as the Salaf of the Ummah.

It is shirk to call anyone besides ALLAH in any times for help. You can call those who can hear and have the capability to help you for example you are walking and you fell down in a Drain then you can call for help from someone near you or a passerby.

But believing that someone DEAD or someone sitting in some place very far like in the Himalayas or someone is sitting in the clouds and will automatically hear your call and can help you miraculously is Shirk. It is Shirk to call or hope from a cow or angels or devils (jinn) or you ask a human anything which is an attribute of Allah for example to change your destiny or award you that which only ALLAH can give.

Is not He Who responds to the distressed one, when he calls on Him, and Who removes the evil, and makes you inheritors of the earth, generations after generations Is there any god with Allah
                        [Surah An-Naml, Aayat 62]

And the Masjids are for Allah, so invoke not anyone along with Allah
[Surah Jinn, Aayat 18]

After revealing the above Aayat, Allah Sub'hanahu wa Ta'ala commanded the Prophet(Sallallahu Alayhi wa sallam) to declare the Aqeedah of Tauheed and also to declare that he himself (Prophet(Sallallahu Alayhi wa sallam)) cannot cause harm or bring the people to the Right Path and its only Allah Sub'hanahu wa Ta'ala. And only Allah is to be worshiped and depended upon.

20. Say: "I invoke only my Lord, and I associate none as partners along with Him.''
21. Say: "It is not in my power to cause you harm, or to bring you to the right path.''
22. Say: "None can protect me from Allah's punishment, nor can I find refuge except in Him.
[Surah Jinn, Aayaat 20-22]

VIEW 2:
We call to Prophet(Sallallahu Alayhi wa sallam) and the Auliya Allah with the view that if Allah wills they can listen to us. We also believe that the Prophet(Sallallahu Alayhi wa sallam) can come to our gatherings when we recite Darood because if Allah wills he can come.

REALITY:
Allah Sub'hanahu wa Ta'ala has not given anybody the right to make doctrines and ascribe it to Islam. The basis of the Islamic Aqeedah is based on what is already revealed in Quran and Sunnah and not on Ifs and Buts. Allah wills whatever He wills. Allah Sub'hanahu wa Ta'ala is alone in His Will. He does not make arrangements as per the wish lists of people who may wish Allah to create another God or create a son or an intermediary.

Likewise, Allah has made arrangements to collect the Darood from all parts of the world and convey it to Prophet(Sallallahu Alayhi wa sallam).

Allah's Prophet(Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) said: "Indeed Allah has angels who roam on the earth and they convey to me greetings(or prayers of peace(darood)) of my Ummah
[Sunan An-Nasa'ee, Hadeeth 1283 &
[See Also Sunan Ad-Daarimee, Hadeeth 2816]
Shaykh Al-Albani  graded Saheeh in Silsila Ahadeeth As-Saheehah #2853]
Shaykh Zubayr Za'ee Classed as Saheeh with below comments
It is also reported by Ahmad(1/456), And Ibn Hibban graded it Saheeh

 VIEW 3:
We call to Prophet(Sallallahu Alayhi wa sallam) and the Auliya Allah with the view that they are our intermediaries to Allah. They have no power on their own but they intercede for us.

REALITY:

The Mushrikeen of Makkah (Polytheists of Makkah) or the arab pagans at the time of Prophet Muhammad (Sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) believed in Allah. But, they were mentioned in Quran as Kaafir and Mushrik.

The following are some of the proofs from Qur'aan.
Ayats similar in meaning are found in many places in Qur'an.

84. Say: "Whose is the earth and whosoever is therein If you know!''
85. They will say: "It is Allah's!'' Say: "Will you not then remember''
86. Say: "Who is (the) Lord of the seven heavens, and (the) Lord of the Great Throne''
87. They will say: "Allah.'' Say: "Will you not then have Taqwa''
88. Say: "In Whose Hand is the sovereignty of everything And He protects, while against Whom there is no protector, if you know''
89. They will say: "(All that belongs) to Allah.'' Say: "How then are you deceived and turn away from the truth''
[Surah Mominoon, Aayat 84-89]

Surely, the religion is for Allah only. And those who take protectors besides Him (say): "We worship them only that they may bring us near to Allah…..
[Surah Zumar, Ayat 3]

Thus, Mushrikeen took their dead ancestors, angels etc., as intermediaries towards Allah and Allah rejected their fictitious doctrine in the Last and Final Revelation.

6)   Prophet(Sallallahu alaihi wa sallam) taught Dua to seek refuge from shirk:

We encourage our brothers and sisters who are still confused in this clear and apparent matter to make Dua to Allah Subhanahu wa Ta'ala for abstaining against Shirk.

"ALLAHUMMA INNI AAOOZUBIKA AN' USHRIKA BIKA WA ANA AALAMU WA ASTAGHFIRUKA LIMA LA A'ALAMU"
O ALLAH I seek refuge in You that I associate anything with you and I know it and I ask forgiveness for that I know not

[Musnad Ahmad 4/403. See Also Al-Albani,
  Sahihul-jami As-Saghir 3/233 and Sahihut-Targhib Wat-Tarhib 1/19]

MAY ALLAH SUB'HANAHU WA TA'ALA SAVE US FROM SHIRK.
